How do I get my Web page on the Net?
In order to get your Web page on the net, you must transfer it from your computer (upload) to JVLNET. You can do this by using a File Transfer Protocol (FTP) program. Visit our Download Software page to download an FTP program that is compatible with your system. Once the software is installed, simply follow the instructions under FTP Client Settings in the Web Publishing section of our site.

Once I have uploaded to my site, what will my Web address be?
http://www.yourdomain.xxx (".xxx" could be .com, .net, etc.)

How can I make sure my homepage (as opposed to some other page on my site) is what appears when I type my Web address?
When you create your Web site, be sure to name your homepage index.html. This will make your homepage address:

http://www.yourdomain.xxx

Example
your domain = "bob" Your homepage address: http://www.bob.com

If you don't name your homage index.html, typing in your Web address will not automatically bring up your homepage.

Does JVLNET support Microsoft's Front Page Extensions?

Yes.  First, you can use Microsoft Front Page to create your entire website, and then use any standard FTP program to upload it to your web directory on JVLNET or to your Domain . You can then add standard HTML coding, CGI scripts and Java as needed to create counters, forms and other exciting webpage design items. There really is no reason to use Microsoft's optional Front Page extensions, and we are suggesting that if you use Microsoft's Front Page to create your web site that you do not use any of the optional Front Page extensions.
Second, if you do wish to use the Microsoft Front Page extensions, please consider the following:

  1. Front Page extensions do not automatically work in your JVLNET's web directory. They need to be installed into your webpage directory by JVLNET.
  2. Front Page extensions are not the internet standard. In fact they are very proprietary to Microsoft Front Page, and most web publishers and HTML experts avoid them. They can actually cause conflicts with the other, more accepted, coding types.
  3. JVLNET recommends against installing the Front Page extensions in your web directory. We do recommend that you use only standard HTML, CGI and Java based coding in your webpages, as they will conform to the industry standard and can be viewed and utilized by the majority of all browsers, and the Front Page extensions may not.
  4. Once Front Page extensions are installed in your JVLNET's web directory or Domain, they can not be easily removed.
  5. Once Front Page extensions are installed you may be unable to use other industry standard HTML, CGI, and Java coding and scripts in your webpages. There is a lot more to lose than you will gain.
  6. If you still wish to have Microsoft's Front Page extensions installed in your JVLNET web directory or Domain, we will do so upon receipt of an email request to webmaster@jvlnet.com. The request should state that you have read this support memo on Front Page considerations.
  7. Once we receive your request, we will reply with a confirmation email and advise you of the expected date and time that the extensions will be installed.
