New User Guide to Getting Connected
Windows 95/98

What You Need to Get Started

  • Your JVLNET username and password.
  • Your local JVLNET dialup number.
  • Your computer - properly connected to a phone line.

Step 1: Verify that DIAL UP NETWORKING is installed

Double click on My Computer, find and double click on the folder marked Dial Up Networking.

If you can not find the icon for Dial Up Networking you will need to install it. In most cases this requires that you have your Windows 95 or 98 CD available. Click here for information on installing Dial Up Networking on your computer.

Step 2: Make a New Connection

Once in the Dial Up Networking folder you will see one of two things. You will either see an icon that says Make New Connection or a new window titled Welcome to Dial Up Networking will automatically open.

If you see the Welcome window click on Next.
Otherwise, double click on the Make New Connection icon.

Step 3: Entering in Critical Connection Information

Name the computer you are dialing JVLNET. Make sure the correct modem is listed and then click on Next.

If you see Standard Modem listed, contact your computer manufacturer for help installing the correct modem.

Type in your local JVLNET Dialup Number. Make certain the JVLNET number you are dialing is a local number.

When entering the phone number, be sure to make sure the area code is blank!

Click Next, then click Finish.

It is important that you verify with the operator that the number is indeed local for you. JVLNET is not responsible for any long distance charges you incur with using the service.

Step 4: Dial Up Properties

Now you should see a new icon labeled JVLNET. Click once with the RIGHT mouse button on the JVLNET icon and select Properties from the menu that appears.

Step 5: Server Type Settings

Click on Server Types. At the top it should already be PPP, etc..., out of the boxes below this, ONLY have checked: Enable Software Compression, and TCP/IP.

Step 6: TCP/IP Settings

Click on the TCP/IP Settings button, located in the lower right hand corner of the Server Types window. At the top, Server Assigned IP Address should be marked, in the middle, mark Specify Name Server Addresses, this will allow you to fill in the primary and secondary DNS: 156.46.57.10 and 156.46.57.20.

After filling in the addresses, click OK until you are back to the Dial Up Networking folder. Right click again on the JVLNET Icon, this time, select Create Shortcut, click Yes on the dialog box that comes up.

Step 7:

Exit back to the desktop (main windows screen). On your desktop, you will see 'Shortcut to JVLNET'. Double click this icon, it will come up with a window that says 'Connect To JVLNET' There is a place for you to fill in your username, Enter your Login ID, (all lower case). The next field is Password, enter the password for your account (all lower case). Now look at the phone number that is being dialed, in most cases it should be just a 7 digit number as the call should be local for you, if there's more than seven digits there, go back to Step 4 and uncheck the box that says Use Country Code and Area Code, then hit OK and start at Step 7 again.

Step 8:

With the username and password filled in, and the correct phone number, click the connect button. After making a connection, an icon will appear on your taskbar next to the clock (bottom lower right of your screen) that either looks like two monitors or a black box with two lights in it.  If there is no icon, you are not connected.

Post Connection - Now that you're connected, the only thing you have to do is open your Internet software, which is either your Internet Explorer, Netscape or other software icon.
