How To Access from
JVLNET
By Don McCleery
The Answer Place
To access AOL & Compuserve through JVLNET, make sure
you already have a working account with the service you are choosing and have the software
installed and tested it using regular dial-up methods. For Compuserve you will need the
latest version, (3.0.1 or later) and for AOL you will need version 3.0 or later. Next make
sure you have a copy of the shortcut to your Dial-up-networking connection that you use
for your internet connection, placed on your desktop. If you have not already done this,
let's do it now. Open up your Dial up networking group by double clicking on the icon in
the "My Computer" group on your desktop. Now Right click on the icon
representing your connection and select "Create Shortcut" Tell it yes to the
question of creating a shortcut on your desktop.
Compuserve
Now let's prepare your Compuserve setup. Open your Compuserve
software and click on 'Access' in the menu bar. Then click on 'Preferences'. Select the
"Connection Tab". Now under 'Connection Type' select "Dial-up
Networking" & set the 'Connect Using' line to read the name of your Internet
connection you placed out on the desktop earlier. That's it! Now, when you decide to hook
up to Compuserve, it will do so using your ISP connection over the internet automatically!
AOL
Now let's setup your AOL software to use the internet
connection. With the AOL setup, you must 'trick' the software into using you ISP
connection but it is quite simple. First open up your AOL version 3 program. Now click on
setup in the initial login box. Now click on 'Create Location'. You may name this new
connection anything you wish. I called mine 'VIA the Internet'. Leave the 'phone numbers '
fields blank since we won't really use them here. (Note the AOL program will plug in a
default number here upon exit but it is of no concern). Set your modem speed to the
highest speed listed that your modem supports. The next line is the important one for us
to use the internet. Set the Network to use 'TCP/IP'. Do this in both the primary and
secondary selection boxes (left and right). Now click on "Save" and in the next
screen, make sure your new "Location" is highlighted, and click "OK".
The "trick" for accessing AOL via your own local ISP is in making your ISP
connection BEFORE you attempt to open AOL . This is where the desktop 'shortcut' comes in.
Simply double click on the icon representing your dialup connection and connect to your
ISP just as you would for browsing or e-mail, only don't open your regular browser
program. Once the ISP connection is established, open up AOL , fill in your AOL password
and click 'Sign On'. The software will automatically use your current ISP connection at
this point. Be sure you remember to manually close your ISP connection when you are
finished with your online session.
